Watch local artists paint and sketch outdoors!

2024 Date and Location to be Determined (Check back for details)

HISTORY

In 2009, Anatomically Correct began its first Annual Brush with Nature, Plein Air Painting and Sketching program.    The program invites visitors to watch artists paint and sketch in an outdoor setting.   "En plein air" is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif ("painting on the ground") in French.   "It’s almost like live theatre – or performance art.   It is so much fun to see how an artist works; and visitors can enjoy the magic of having artwork created right in front of their eyes.”

In addition to the outdoor art festival, participating artists regularly exhibited their finished artworks inside the Emily Oaks Nature Center Wonderland Gallery, 4650 Brummel, Skokie, IL.

Howard Crystal

Aliens Have Landed, Watercolor, 9 x 13 1/2"  $340

Years after starting in art and irregularly studying I am finally presenting my work to the world. Currently starting an art practice and pursuing DIY art school through participation as a member in Plein Air Painters of Chicago and Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts.

Committed to realism, usually expressive realism, I am sensitive to the life in everything, you might say my principle is, see what can move, ready to jump, is related, and connected. We will never understand all and will always explore and review ourselves and our universe. I am participating in that process. A standard for my work, "It is either fine or it is not art," (Carlson, Guide to landscape Painting).

My work is 2D, usually watercolor on paper, sometimes charcoal, pen and ink or acrylic.      © 2020

Deb Edmunds

October Katia

Water-Soluble Oil,   11 x 14"    $135

Without any formal education in art, I began working with watercolors in the early 80's.  After a long break from watercolors I decided to explore other mediums.  I have worked with many mediums including;  pastel, acrylic, pen and ink, alcohol ink, gouache, color pencils and water mixable oils. I enjoy painting landscapes of all four seasons and have continued to work almost daily out of pure enjoyment.  Over ten years ago, I started plein air painting with a group of Lake County artists and enjoy the challenge of working outdoors.       © 2020

Kuhn Hong at  Brush with Nature - Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park

Sunworshipper, Oil, 20 x 16"   $800

Kuhn Hong

I am a retired physician in Chicago area. After retirement, I went to Ethiopia to serve in a small mission hospital as a volunteer physician from 2013 to 2018, for 5 years. I enjoy painting as a hobby since I was a small boy and had privilege of having my solo exhibition in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Paris in France, Seoul in South Korea and Chicago. I recently had an exhibition at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana with "Art in the Time of Covid". My paintings were featured on the cover of many journals including Chicago Medicine, Christian Medical Doctors and Swedish Surgical Journal, etc. I am a member of Palette and Chisel, Plein Air Painters Chicago and Duneland Plein Air Painters. I enjoy plein air painting as well as working in studio for portraits and figures.      © 2020

Steve Johnson

Pines in Autumn

Oil,  8x 10"

$175

A native Chicagoan, Steve began cartooning and illustrating in his early teens.    While studying at the American Academy of Art in 1976, he worked as an animator and illustrator for film and print.    One of his portraits was selected for display on Harambee 26, a local television show hosted by Bears great, Gale Sayers.

After art school, he began to teach drawing and painting at the Leyden Evening School and at Triton College; and became a Waldorf class teacher.  His school curriculum poster design is displayed in Waldorf schools across the nation.

He has also taught privately for the past 40 years.

Steve considers himself a portrait and plein air painter and continues to teach workshops on portrait painting in watercolor and oil.      He is a  member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and the Chicago Plein Air Painters.      © 2020

Michael LaTala

Second Breath, Oil, 16 x 12"  $375

After receiving a Associate of Arts degree in Advertising/Design from the American Academy of Art, I've had a successful career as a storyboard illustrator working on staff at Draft FCB and Ogilvy & Mather, two of Chicago's largest advertising agencies. Pursuing my love of painting, I studied with Scott Burdick, Dan Gerhartz, Romel De La Torre and Richard Schmid.   Based in Chicago, I express the natural beauty I see in the world around me through my handling of materials such as oil paint, pastels and charcoal. My landscapes, still life, figurative, and portrait work offer a fresh and seemingly effortless symphony of color.     I strive to achieve the overpowering beauty of the artists I admire such as Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Anders Zorn. I push myself with every painting to create art that will do the same, inspiring young artists, and individuals, as these masters have done for me.    © 2020

Carol Luc

Inside Plant (Zimmerman), Watercolor, 9 x 12"  $70

Carol Luc routinely exhibits her paintings and prints in the Midwest as well as nationally. She has been honored with multiple juried awards, competitive artist's residencies, two CAAP grants, and several solo exhibitions. Her work is in Public Collections (such as the David and Sarajean Ruttenberg collection, Harper College, and the Illinois Institute of Art—Chicago) and has also been published in Art Scene Chicago 2000, Northern Now, the Chicago Tribune and Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet, among others. She has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University.

Greg Mejia

Sculpture Park Trail

Oil paint on masonite panel

14" x 11"

$280

Gregorio Mejia is a Southside Chicago artist who has a home/studio just south of the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Originally from Indiana, he commuted to Chicago to attend the American Academy of Art situated in the Loop. Since graduating from there he has worked many different jobs and has pursued art both as a commercial artist, (primarily production and comp work with a bit of illustration) and as a fine artist (landscape, still life, figurative, and portrait painting). He is a member of both the Chicago Society of Artists (CSA) and the Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists (CAVA). Mejia also served as a past at-large board member for CAVA.      © 2020

Alexandra Stevenson

Alexandra Stevenson paints in her Ravenswood, Chicago studio, inspired by area architecture and forest preserves. Plein air sketching provides the starting point for larger, semi-abstract paintings. Working outside brings all the senses -- the feel of wind, the temperature of air, the floating sounds of the environment -- to bear on the visual act of drawing, expanding the art making experience.    © 2020

"My favorite part about today was chatting with all of the curious enthusiastic kids.

I inked this while I was letting my little oil painting dry a bit - I always pack my sketching stuff when i am plein air painting. I tend to lose focus and like to take a break. I also sketched a cool striped dragonfly for a little girl that was chatting me up. I let her help paint it and she signed her name so I gave it to her. Emily Oaks Nature Center A brush with Nature event earlier today.

My little art friend from this morning that i sketched the dragonfly for made the WGN news. She is at the end of this video showing off my sketch."

http://wgntv.com/2017/07/09/fundraiser-serves-up-pancakes-with-a-side-of-nature/

"Saw this really cool dragonfly and it kept returning to the branch near where I was painting. A little girl liked it so i drew it for her with my ink pen and she helped me fill it in with color. I painted it true to color but added some blues and greens to the foreground. I gave her my watercolors and told her to add whatever she wanted. She chose bright red - my favorite color. Everything looks better with bright red!"
