Artist's Statement
With a background in drafting, printmaking and graphic design,
illustration seemed the next logical jump for David DeRosa who, after focusing
his studies on technique, composition, color theory and anatomy, graduated from
the Academy of Art University in 1997. During the next six years, the artist
functioned as a freelancer while cultivating his more ambitious pursuits and
passions. In the last few years he has gone back to his roots
and reemerged with a style he calls: 'Pop Impressionism.' “They are after images
of life as I perceive it – people I meet or admire, the banal yet poignant
landscapes I encounter, personal iconography and social-political commentary all
stripped down to their simplest forms.” David’s influences include:
M.C. Escher, Alphonse Mucha, J.C. Leyendecker, Coles Philips, Rothko, Mondrian
and Rodin, of whom he is a fourth generation student. Currently,
David resides in The United States. In the past few years and
through a variety of venues, his art has helped to raise thousands of dollars
for some very notable charities including: Glide Memorial, Best Buddies Intl.,
Trans Africa Forum, Art into Action, Koret Family House, Camp Okizu and Visual
Aid.
In June 2007, Artist David DeRosa completed a cross country tour where he packed
20+ paintings into a van and took it "to the people;" 7 shows + 6 cities + one
month = The Catachismic tour (from San Francisco to NYC). He
also brought along recent film school grad; Richard Enriquez who captured the
entire experience and is currently editing it together as a feature length
documentary. The documentary titled, "BURN: David DeRosa's
Catachismic Tour" is currently in post production and will be released by
DeROSart and Prescription Pictures soon.
David believes he is the first visual artist to do this.
Of the 8 pieces (and 3 prints) sold throughout the course of his travels (which
were actually used to fund the tour), 4 were to people who had never been to a
gallery before; " I take no small amount of pride in that. My goal was to
create an open forum for dialogue among people of different backgrounds across
America through the interaction between the viewer and the artwork. This tour,
which itself was performance art, was about bridging gaps... connecting to
people and communities on an individual level and encouraging them to pen their
minds to different views of a single idea. In that respect, I was
tremendously successful. "
