Artist's Statement
"My work is a filtration of a lifetime worth of symbols and
choreography, which depict a concept. In the past year, I have developed a more
cinematographic narrative style. A series of seemingly unrelated paintings on
the paper, demand the viewer to draw parallels and conclusions. Instead of
figures, I have chosen hands as stand-ins.
I work hard at uncovering the symbols from my own associations and ruminations.
Some of my symbols are derived from my Israeli/Jewish background, i.e., the
hills of the Golan embrace the plain as do the hands of the couple embrace.
My process for creating the pieces begins with a written concept on which I
build images. Animals and plants represent aspects of nature. Humans struggle
alongside nature, sometimes oblivious to it, often fighting it. In my recent
work, the Israeli landscape has captured me with its undulating and
simultaneously harsh topography. By using a deliberate placement and sizing of
the landscapes alongside hands, people and other items, I am creating a new type
of narrative, less confrontational than the mythologies of the past years, it is
also more mysterious.
Currently, I paint in acrylics on paper. I apply upwards of ten layers on the
paper working as the Old Masters did with their layers of veneer. By building up
layers of contrasting colors I attain a transluscence which I further emphasize
with a surface of gel. This final layer also gives the painting an illusion of
greater distance and dimensionality."
