Artist's Statement

Judith uses a variety of mediums in creating her artwork which include oil, egg-tempera, watercolor, and glass.  The hallmarks of her work are rich color and detail, as she layers decorative patterns, silhouettes and symbolism. She blends images of antiquity with a contemporary sensibility, often inspired by classic literary works.   Botanical imagery, calligraphy and the human form feature strongly in the paintings of Chicago-area artist Judith Joseph. Creator of nearly 400 commissioned illuminated manuscripts, Ms. Joseph was twice given the Illinois Arts Council Artist's Fellowship Award. She is a painting instructor at the Chicago Botanic Garden, the North Shore Art League and the Suburban Fine Arts Center in Highland Park.  She is also a  published illustrator (The Passover Celebration, LTP, 2001.)
