Why I love Chicago...

A Butterfly Landing on Your Shoulder

Chicago is a city made for an artist.

Turquoise lake.   Steel-quilt skyline.

My favorite place is China town, Uptown.

The worn-down marble steps inside Union Station.

The way blue evening spills over Michigan Avenue,

just as the lights twinkle on

like someone lit a hundred matches in a single strike.

Chicago is a crowded lakefront bike path on a hot afternoon.

Chicago is a pick-up sand volleyball game.

Chicago is people watching on the steps of the Art Institute.

Wandering through Garfield Park Conservatory.

Picking out a bouquet of purple delphinium at the Farmer's Market.

Never enough time

for all the city's invitations.

To play Frisbee with the spotted dog named Molly at Montrose beach

To splash in the spray at Buckingham fountain

To buy a watermelon Popsicle from the street vendor

outside the old Sears store on Lawrence.

Chicago is a butterfly landing on your shoulder.

Chicago is a birthday present everyday.

Surprises and wishes.

Welcoming home

Families and their biggest dreams,

best ideas

and lovely voices from faraway places.

My place, our home,

Chicago.
