Born in 1973, Cat Chow received her B.A. in
Theatre from Northwestern University where she became interested in costume
design. It was here that she began to work with theater props and
costumes, creating medieval costumes using chain mail armor.
Cat's one of a kind wearable art designs have incorporated interwoven dollar bills, flat washers, one long zipper, chain mail, corks, brass rings or rubber O-rings, twist ties, plastic hospital I.D. bracelets, dress snaps and measuring tape. Her most well-known piece is titled “Not for Sale,” a full-length dress crocheted from 1,000 dollar bills she collected from donors before shredding and stitching them.
Her work has been shown internationally at the UNESCO in Paris and in the states at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts (Costume Institute), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston.
