Saren is a self-taught outsider artist who has exhibited her artwork at Mars Gallery, the Irish American Heritage Center, Clarke House, August House Studio, Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago Athenaeum and Ann Nathan Gallery.
"I create sculptures that frequently reveal the interplay of two of my primary drivers. One is to choose surface materials that are sheer and delicate - like a membrane. I give these materials underpinnings that allow them to defy expectations. I want to challenge the all too frequent assumption that fragile or delicate things (people) are inherently weak. I want to show the viewers that delicate can also be very, very strong. I am exploring how far I can stretch these apparently fragile materials. What is the tensile strength of gauze over a ten foot span? How far can I push it?
The second factor is that found objects frequently trigger me to 'see" a fully realized art piece in my mind. I can see the finished piece as surely as a small child looking up a clouds who declares, "This one is a gorilla, but that one is just a cloud." My job as an artist is to construct a sculpture that allows the viewers to see, however incongruously, what was once only in my mind.
I want the viewers to hold their breath for a moment as if to protect the art from disintegrating right before their eyes. Then I want them to smile as they realize how much more there is to see in something than just the surface - to be enchanted by the unexpected."
