Art in Alternative Spaces

What is Anatomically Correct?

Mission Statement:

Anatomically Correct is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing work by visual artists in alternative spaces in a combined effort to diversify, educate and promote community awareness of the visual arts.

Anatomically Correct's exhibitions are unique as they are often held in complement to community events and theatrical productions.    The exhibitions are free to the public and opening receptions often include performances by poets, musicians and performance artists.

Anatomically Correct has presented exhibitions at the Apollo Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre, Bailiwick Arts Center, Chicago Dramatists, Gilda's Club Chicago, The Goodman Theatre, Lake Bluff/Lake Forest Historical Society, National Pastime Theatre, Northlight Theatre/North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, Prop Thtr, Steppenwolf Theatre, Strawdog Theatre,  The Theatre Building, Transient Theatre and the Skokie Public Library.  We have also worked to raise funds for  the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, Help Hospitalized Veterans, the Women for Women Foundation, Cure Autism Now and Autism Speaks.

Anatomically Correct organized the first annual (2006) Highland Park Art Walk in Highland Park, Illinois, a juried exhibition of over 75 artists displayed in merchant windows and in empty storefront spaces.   The Art Walk is now in its 3rd year.

It is through this outreach that artists are exposed to a wider audience and audiences are exposed to work by a greater number of artists.   In addition, through a variety of family workshops, Anatomically Correct's "Arts Access" program encourages families and members of the community to participate and create artwork, murals and public works of art alongside local artists.

Artists' Registry:

Anatomically Correct fosters the careers of emerging and mid-career artists through its free exhibitions in alternative spaces and educational seminars for artists.

Our foster program includes a marketing seminar, which shows artists how to market their work and our portfolio review and development seminar, which show artists how to develop a professional portfolio. We also show artists what is involved in organizing and presenting a public exhibition. In addition, our extensive website provides a marketing tool for artists to promote their work.  Through our website, Artists' works can be seen and are often selected by graphic designers, interior designers, art dealers, publishers, photo stylists, set designers and commercial advertisers. Anatomically Correct also offers an internship and job-referral service to qualified artists.

Exhibition/Publishing Opportunities:

Since its inception in 1991, Anatomically Correct has presented over 200 innovative exhibitions, showcasing work by over 1,200 talented visual and performance artists and musicians, reaching a combined audience of over four million.    Also, Anatomically Correct provides exposure for its artists by collaborating with publishing companies to publish the work of artists on the covers of programs, music cds, magazines and newsletters.

Community Outreach Programs:

In addition to free public exhibitions, Anatomically Correct offers educational programs workshops for youths aimed at inspiring them to seek careers in the arts.

Anatomically Correct has held workshops in a variety of Chicago neighborhoods including Uptown, Lakeview, Wicker Park & Bucktown which provide youths with a nurturing and creative environment where they can expand and develop their talent and skills and showcase their work. In addition, as part of our "Artist's Talk" series, exhibiting artists are asked to speak to youths about their artwork. We aim to provide youths with a source of inspiration, self-esteem and motivation for seeking careers in the arts.

Internship:

Anatomically Correct offers an internship and job-referral service to qualified artists.
